Suurkiitos Villelle haastattelun tekemisestä!
1. Who is/are your so called "rolemodel(s)" from Donald Duck artists?
The real Disney-magic of course came from mr Disney himself. My
favourite movie is Fantasia, but all movies made during his life are
classic. With DonaldDuck-comics it's easy to say Barks is my absolute
favourite. I've learned so much from reading his work: he's a
Shakespearian-level storyteller in the first place and a real good
artist in his own right. The most impressive element about his
stories is his capability to recognize important elements in every
story and being able to get his tales come across dosed (!), cristal-
clear and hugely imaginative and funny. Always good, which in itself
is amazing, considering the amount of stories he has produced. Me
myself find just the illustrating part a big challenge, but Barks did
it all, world-class.
On a fair distance there are great other Duck-artists, like fellow-
Dutch artist Daan Jippes (for his incredible lifely pages), Branca
(great acting Ducks), Vicar (clear design) and, a bit guilty
pleasure, Marco Rota (realistic environments).
2. Is there any certain character from Duckburg, that you prefer to
write and draw?
No-one beats Donald himself. He is us and therefor ultimate. Of
course, I love Gladstone to hate, Scrooge for bringing us to far and
away places, and Gyro Gearloose for his offbeat-imagination. But
really, I like them all. It's like asking a mother which child she
loves the most, I cannot tell :)
3. How long does it take to write an average story?
I don't excactly know. I can imagine sometimes a story comes fast,
sometimes it's hard to get the story you feel translated into words,
panels and pages. There are 'easy' writers who get their stories very
fast and slow ones. The danger with 'fast-writers' obviously is
'machine-like' stories, but I know some who are fast ánd good.
4. What makes drawing Donald Ducks so intresting/enjoyable
Well, what not. It might sound sassy, but I'm a huge fan myself you
know :) With the Dutch DonaldDuck the working-atmosphere is
friendly, you are stimulated to deliver the best you can and they
offer you the time to do so. Believe me, I've worked for a lot of
'commercial' agencies as well and they normally want you to finish
your work yesterday and you get vast briefings from people who have
never hold a pencil in their hands on how to do your drawing.
Hoofddorp (Dutch headquarters) is, seen from that perspective, ehm,
paradise. The whole magazine is put together by friendly people and
Disney-fans :)
5. Do you work with Donald Ducks only when you draw/write, or is
Donald Duck part of your "free" time?
Not so much I have to admit. I don't want to be waking up with a
Disney-alarm, get out of my MickeyMouse bed, opening the Pooh-
curtains and drink out of my Donald-mug. I've seen people who live
like that really, but for me 50 hours a week has always been enough,
working in the treasure-vault anyway :) I've been really busy since
I parted Disney, but probably the fan-part of myself will no doubt
return. I'm thinking about reading all the Bucky-Bug stories ever
told :)
6. And for final, your greetings to Ankkalinnake
Ehm, thanks, will do?
:)
