1. Who is/are your so called "rolemodel(s)" from Donald Duck artists?
Carl Barks was my only role model for the Ducks and the Duck stories. No one else in America during my chilhood did the Ducks to any extent. Other artists did not start doing Duck stories on a regular basis until 1950. By that time I had seen and followed Carl's work for seven years.
2. Is there any certain character from Duckburg, that you prefer to
write and draw?
I've always enjoyed doing Donald and the Boys the most. Mainly because they can be involved in any kind of story at all. The same is not as true for Scrooge. Nearly all of his stories have to deal with the acquiring of money, or the protecting of it. Since I created Uncle Rumpus [Unkka T. Kumiankka, toim. huom.] and established him as Scrooge's half-brother, I've been able to do a couple of stories with just the two of them, and NOT deal with money as the plot. I just finished an 8 pager titled "Scrooge for a day", where Rumpus has to pose as Scrooge in order to try and deflect a crazy duck woman who is trying to romance Scrooge.
3. How long does it take to write an average story?
It takes anywhere from five to seven days to write a ten page story. There have been a couple of occasions when I managed to write a ten pager in one day! Too bad that doesn't happen more often!
4. What makes drawing Donald Ducks so intresting/enjoyable
Doing the Ducks is enjoyable because they are so real. I know that may sound odd, but it's true. They are substitutes for real people. They live in a house, pay bills, wash the dishes, cut the grass and sometimes have trouble with neighbor Jones. Any adventures they have grow from this simple, average way of life we all live. Most comics book characters like a superheroes and so on are not believable in real life terms. Most comic book characters lack a real "home life", and for me they just aren't "real"!
5. Do you work with Donald Ducks only when you draw/write, or is
Donald Duck part of your "free" time?
No, for the most part I'm only doing Ducks for the stories. Once in awhile I do some watercolors based on my comic book covers published in America, but otherwise I do other things with my free time. I paint, draw, and watch movies!
6. And for final, Your greetings to Ankkalinnake
I just had a thought! Is Ankkalinnake the Finnish word for "Duckburg"? The city where they all live? If so, my heartiest greetings to Finlands Duckburg! The Finlanders are the biggest Disney fans in the world. I'm told that nearly one fourth of the population of Finland read the Aku Ankka books. If only that were true in North America!
Ankkalinnake kiittää William Van Hornia haastattelusta!
